WHY IS MASTERING AT MAINFRAME MIXMASTERS SO INEXPENSIVE ?
Well, the biggest constant cost-factor in running a studio is probably the rent. Up until 2004 i was renting a suite at a big studio complex and of course that cost went into the calculations. Then i decided to move the studio to my home. Since i was producing, mixing and mastering music professionally i build several places for that purpose myself, history says that this is my 8th studio ! Over the last couple of years i perfectly improved the acoustics in the mastering room with highly effective absorbers, diffusers and construction. After having build an audiophile mastering chain to meet my sophistication I am now passing this savings on to you with this great set of flatrates !

why is a flatrate better than per hour charging ? >>> labels and artists usually have budgets for things that must be done and we like you to be comfortable with something that can you can calcualte, e.g. fixed prices. our fair flatrates are a "no price surprise" and "sonic satisfaction" guaranty for all.
send music on cd-audio or cd-rom ? >>> it's best to send your recordings on a quality cd-rom or dvd-r for error free results since cd-rom offers an extra level of error-correction. further advantage of rom over cd-audio is that cd-audio can only be read in frames what makes it inaccurate for reading starts + ends by a few ms offset and audio can be chopped off.
what about samplerate, bit-depth, dither ? >>> to give you a good and short advice on this: send the original unaltered recording with the samplerate it was recorded with when mixing digital and export/bounce/record at a high bit-depth (24bit/32bit). if you're recording from an analog console capture the audio with the highest samplerate and bit-depth that works for you. for audiophile projects a good analog like recording samplerate is 96khz and at 24bit. the mastering process itself is taking place at 96khz/32bitfloat, dithering is applied there as the very last step after downsampling. please don't apply dithering/noise-shaping before mastering.
your word on using peak limiters and compressors on the mix ? >>> if you're using a peak-limiter on the mixbus please take care that peaks are never or only very ocassionally. using a nice compressor on the mix can be a wonderfull thing for the overall tone you're looking for but don't hit it hard, i would suggest only 1-2db of compression but most of the time less will do. we're taking care of bringing you the glue, tone + loudness you want and what is advisable.
what is a upc/ean code and do i need it ? >>> also called the barcode, it's usually provided by your distributor or label if you're not registered for yourself. the code identifies the producer/manufacturer of a product, in our case the whole cd album, and is required for importing products to USA, or for diverse registration systems. as a rule of thumb: if you got one then communicate it to us to be coded on the cd master. (13 digits)
what is a ISRC code and do i need it ? >>> this is of interest for lables as this code identifies each single audio track as well as the label, year and number. you must be registered to use and it is advised to give every released track it's unique isrc code. the code is written into the pq coding system of a cd and is important for radio-play/ broadcasters for accounting and collecting license fees. (12 digits+letters)
how long does it take to get our stuff mastered ? >>> that depends on the size of the project, but for a regular complete cd mastering it usually takes a week. i'm known for being able to work on even the thightest schedule but since labels often miscalculate the time mastering takes (is it ready tomorrow then...?) it's just cool for everybody, the label, the artist, the me and the music to have some time buffer and be relaxed
file transfer via internet - online mastering ? >>> the most common method at the moment is uploading your files (or packed file archives) with filehosters (e.g. www.sendspace.com, www.yousendit.com etc.) or to any other secure ftp-server. then simply send the download-link to mainframe.mastering@gmail.com ! never send whole files via email unless it's just a mp3 ! if you're concerned about safety reg. web-transfer of your files then i'd suggest to use this method: pack your files as a .rar archive and set the archives attributes to "encrypted" and set a password. voila! smaller filesize, checksum, safety! [e.g. winrar/pc, stuffit/mac]
now on the battlefield for about a year both units designed by rupert neve are definitely here to stay. the NEVE PORTICO 5043 is a great mixbus/2bus compressor and therefore qualifies for being a great, slightly coloured mastering compressor as well. and colour is what we want, esp. in the war against digital harschness ! it has a that nice neveish fat + round transformer tone it gives the sound just the right glue and density, when used right in the classic feedback mode; the feedforward mode gives you a fast ssl alike snap but is'nt used much here. the NEVE PORTICO 5042 stayed on the main mastering chain for some time but is now dedicated for my vocal mixbus. i found it especially usefull for vocals as it gives a certain body to them that cannot be created with anything else i know (but tape...). on this extra bus i just succesfully used it parallel to the main mastering chain where it gave the material a nice grab without affecting the overall sound too much (many say it's a subtle effect but i find it quiet dramatic! rupert neve designs
